Climate Index

A programming work in progress

The Climate Change Resiliency Ranker is an effort to bring a project of mine to the wider public. Several years ago, I became interested in analyzing which countries would be the best place to be in the face of massively disruptive climate change. This led me to the ND-GAIN index, a project at the University of Notre Dame which collects 45 indicators, aggregates them into an index, and ranks countries accordingly. While the indicators are an excellent collection of data and I commend ND-GAIN’s creators, I had an issue with its methodology. When calculating the final index, the indicators were weighted not based on evaluations of their relative importance, but rather were largely weighted equally. I hardly thought “dependence on cereal imports” and “dam capacity” were of equal importance, so I quickly cooked up my own weights and rankings in a spreadsheet. Weights are a subjective thing in this case, as they are dependent upon one’s chief worries and purposes for ranking. For that purpose, I here present the Delavan Custom Climate Index, which allows users to create their own weights and rankings from a wide range of indicators.
